Prayer for 2023.

The safest place in this world is to be with God.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not rely on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Honour God with your wealth and your first fruits. Then your barns will be filled to overflowing.” Proverbs Chapter 3.

In all cultures there was a time when honouring God was important. Once there was a custom to present a new born child to God in the place of worship to seek God’s blessing. We were told by our parents to give some of the money from our first pay packet to God, when starting a new job. Today, this does not appear to be the case.

At one time there was a sense of holiness before God. Where is the presence of God in our communities today? Today our children our being exposed to violent images on social media and television. To gain access to these images is very easy for young people. Politicians are taking about making the streets safer but they don’t consider how children can be protected from being exposed to such images. God is Holy and nothing unholy can live in his presence. Unfortunately, we have brought God down to level of human thinking.

Today we fear all the things that can go wrong in this world: the threat of nuclear war and the destruction it would cause. If God was to shed one drop of His Holiness onto this world, it would wipe out this planet. Jesus himself said, “Do not fear what man can do to you but instead fear God.” God holds this planet in his hands. He hold you too in his hands.

The Psalmist said, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not rely on your own insight. Honour the Lord with your first fruits and your barns will be filled with over flowing.” The key is to learn to honour God with everything we have. We are to give God the first place in our lives. We are safer with God than anywhere else in this world. God is the security we need just now in this world where everything else is falling to pieces.

You can’t trust leaders of this world, you can’t trust politicians but you can trust God. For me I have put my trust in Jesus. I have no idea what my future is but I trust Jesus with it.

Dear God

I want to start this New Year

With you.

I acknowledge I need you.

I am helpless without you

Please take hold of my hand

And please let me travel with you.
