The Good Samaritan

A religious man came to Jesus and said to him, “Lord who is my neighbour?”Jesus looked at him and told him a story.
There was a man who was travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho when he was attacked by bandits. They beat him up, stripped him of his clothing, took all his belongings and left him to die on the side of the road.
After a while a priest happened to be walking down the same road. He saw the man lying on the ground, looked at him and walked onto the other side of the road.
Then also a religious man happened to be walking down the same road. He saw the man lying on the ground, looked at him and also walked onto the other side of the road.
But a Samaritan happened to be walking down the same road. (Now remember Samaritans did not like the Jews). When the Samaritan saw the man, his heart was filled with compassion for him. He took a bandage and oil out of his bag and dressed the man’s wounds. Then he carefully picked him up and put him on his donkey and took him to an inn and looked after him.
The next morning the Samaritan got up early and made sure the man was alright. He paid the inn keeper and said to him. “Please look after this man, if it costs you any more money, I will pay you back on my return.”
Jesus looked at the religious leader and asked him,” Which out of these three men behaved as a neighbour?
“Sir, the one who helped the man.”
Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”
The story of the Good Samaritan is a beautiful story of care and love.  It teaches us to love God and our neighbour as we love ourselves. It also teaches us to look beyond our own personal prejudices and help those in need who may not be of the same cultural background as ourselves. It teaches us to be compassionate as God is compassionate.(The story of the Good Samaritan as Jesus told it is found in Luke Chapter 10 Verses 25 -37 in the Bible)

Prayer
Dear Jesus,
Teach me to follow the example of the
Good Samaritan,
Please fill my heart with your love and compassion
For this hurting and broken world.
