Repentance.
Psalm 51 was written after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed. The big question is does God forgive the sins we have committed?
God is the one who gives life and has the right to take it away. It feels in our modern world man wants to be in a position to control life and death.
Man continues to murder innocent children, women and men in unnecessary wars. He has completely ignored the commandment, “Do not Murder.” The world leaders watch murder of innocent children and that for me the worst sin of all. Murder is unacceptable to God.
In David’s case it was a calculated murder. Today we would call it First Degree Murder.
Psalm 51 is about repentance and receiving forgiveness from God. Over the years, I worked with a few clients who had committed murder. They were struggling with the issue of forgiveness. They had done their time in prison but the guilt was still hanging over them. David did not feel any guilt after he confessed his sins to God. He believed in the forgiveness of God.
In the words of A.W. Tozer, “God is mercy”. Without mercy there is no forgiveness.
David approached God by asking for his mercy. He was focused on the great kindness and mercy of God. He knew God was bigger than his sin. Charles Wesley the hymn writer said, “Plenteous Grace with thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin.” One thing I would say is that no world leader can pardon himself. Only God forgives. King David had to confess his sins and showed great humility.
Psalm 51
1.Be Kind to me O God.
Because you are big in kindness, mercy and forgiveness.
Your love is as big as the endless sea.
2. Wash away the wrongs I have thought, said and done.
Clean me on the inside. You require purity on the inside.
3. I am aware of the wrongs which I have done
They play on my mind day and night.
4. I have done what you consider to be evil. I have sinned against you. Your judgement is correct. I accept your judgement for me.
5. I have been sinful from the day I was born.
6. You require truth and honesty in the inner being. Help me to make wise decisions.
7. Wash me on the inside with your cleansing power; and I will be clean. Wash me and I will be white as snow.
8. Let me again feel your goodness and love. Thou you have crushed and broken me.
9. Do not look at my sins. Please take them away to the depths of the sea.
10.Create in me a clean heart and give me a spirit that would sustain me.
11. Do not cut me off from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12. Let me know your forgiveness again in my heart and give me a spirit that will sustain me.
13. Then I will teach others to return to you.
14. Spare my life O God. Deliver me from my guilt.
15. Help me to praise you in the midst my situation.
16. You do not require me to buy your forgiveness by bringing you sacrifices. You want me to be sorry for my sins.
17. My sacrifice is a broken heart; sadness and I am deeply sorry for my sins. You will not reject my sadness.
18. I will praise you and give you thanks all my life. Amen
