Choose God
And
Choose life
“Do not cast me from your
presence or take your
Holy spirit from me.” ( Psalm 51:11)
Today understandably there are lots of fears about the future. But I think our biggest concern should be not to be disconnected from the presence of God. The presence of God is what protects us and keeps us alive.
His presence gives us life, it gives us the sun that shines, the moon at night and the air we breathe to be alive. To be cast from God’s presence is like we exist but don’t really live.
Without the presence of God, it would be like being in the desert without drinking water. Sin casts us away from God’s presence. Life without God’s presence is a very lonely life. Sin separates us from God.
Without his presence there is no life. We are alive but not fully alive without God. David realized how precious was the presence of God. Without God’s presence the soul is not alive.
In west we are aware that there is a body and a mind but not so much aware that there is a soul. The soul is a real being in us. David in the Psalms often prayed, “My soul thirsts for you, O God”. Sadly, people seek to satisfy the body and not the soul in this world.
When Moses went to Egypt to rescue the people of Israel after they had been in captivity for over 400 hundred years, The presence of God went with Moses. Pharaoh had an army at his disposal but Moses had the presence of God. Pharaoh’s army was no match for the presence of God. The battles we fight are no match for the presence of God.
Let’s be clear about one thing throughout history no one has defeated the presence of God. Hitler tried it but he failed.
David had sinned so he was cut off from fellowship with God. Being cut off from fellowship with God had mentally and physically drained him. He was unable to draw his strength from God to function fully mentally and physically.
Light and darkness cannot shake hands. Sin and God cannot shake hands. After David had sinned, he was begging God not to cast him from his presence.
David also asks God not to take his holy spirit from him. The Holy Spirit is a Spirit of God. Without the Holy Spirit there is no life. The Holy Spirit breathes life into us.
He empowers us and gives us strength to live for God. We must remember David is pleading with God for his mercy. He knows God is a God of mercy. God will wipe away his sins. A.W. Tozer said, “Mercy is not something God has, but something God is.”
When we die there are only two places. A place where there is the presence of God and a place where there isn’t a presence of God. To be with God we have to make a decision for him now. When we choose God, we choose life.
In our modern world, the presence of God is our only safety. A place to hide in times of trouble.
Dear God
Do not banish me from your presence
Do not take your Holy Spirit from me.
I choose you
I choose life.
I choose you as my hiding place.
My Anchor in the storms of life.
Amen.
