Jesus and the widow
of Nain.
Loss is one of the hardest things we will have to cope with down here on earth. The loss of a loved one is psychologically extremely painful. Jesus approached a gate of a town called Nain; a man had died was being carried in a coffin with a large crowd following him.
He was the only son of a widow. To lose her only son must have been devastating for her. This was a double blow for her as she had already lost her husband. She had raised her son on her own with very little income, but now he had been taken away from her. Her hopes and expectations of life had been devastated.
It must have felt everything had been taken away from her. That extreme feeling of loss. She would now have to face a life of poverty and loneliness.
Every loss is tough but the loss of a son or a daughter is probably the hardest as this is not in the order of life. Parents are supposed to die before their children.
When I worked in a care home, a lady came into care who had lost her son. The loss was so painful that she could not live in the present.
When Jesus saw the woman of Nain, he felt compassion and empathy for her and said to her, “Do not cry.” Jesus approached the coffin and touched it. He said, “Young man I say to you rise!” The man sat up and began to speak. Jesus gave him to his mother.
Jesus intervened in the situation, not at the request of the mother of the dead man, but based on his own mercy and compassion.
The message of this story is that Jesus cares! He cared about the widow in her dire situation. He stepped in to give the widow hope and life to her son. This is what our world needs today: Life and hope.
Just a thought about a young man who recently took his own life. God is very sympathetic to our loss and he has great compassion for those who take their own life. He understands them and we can take great comfort from that.
Jesus cares! As in this story he intervened without the widow’s permission. (The story of the widow’s only son is found in Luke7:11-17)
Dear Jesus
Come into my life
And bring your Peace into it;
Please bring life into every part of me
that has died.
Let it be born again with new hope.
Thank you
