The miracle at Cana.
When our own resources come to an end
God can show his power!
It is strange that today we are encouraged to be self-sufficient and believe in our own strength. But then how could God demonstrate his power in us. St Paul expresses it when he said, “In my weakness God’s strength is demonstrated.” Contrary to what the world thinks, God’s strength is demonstrated in our weakness. Sadly, in our world today all i hear about is World Leaders threatening each other with war and taking over other countries by force. This is not from God.
We should be encouraged that weakness is not a sign of failure but an opportunity for God to demonstrate his power. There is a saying that the “strongest survive,” but this is not true in God’s world. The truth is God chooses weak people to demonstrate his power. The first disciples of Jesus were unschooled but yet they changed the world.
But the truth is there are times when our own strength fails us. We become ill, lose a loved one, or become unemployed. These circumstances are not easy to cope with. We desperately need God in these circumstances. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, God will comfort them.” How this happens is a mystery and only known to God.
Also, we cannot rely on the resources to be here forever. A friend once told me that one day the Earth will not be able to cope with the demands that are being put on it- by men who are regularly bombing it, and by their greed and selfishness.
In the moments of weakness, we need God’s supernatural power to bring us healing and comfort. Human eyes can only deal with what it can see but God can deal with the unknown. Most problems in this life we need Gods divine intervention.
Jesus and his disciples were invited to a wedding in Cana and the wine ran out. That would have been unthinkable at a wedding and very embarrassing for the bridegroom and his relatives.
Jesus’ mother brings the situation to his attention. It is interesting that the Mary the mother of Jesus brought the situation to his attention. She must have thought Jesus could do something. That is faith when the situation seems hopeless and we bring it to God. Sadly, we do rush to everyone else before we rush to God.
There were six jars there for the Jewish rites of purification each holding thirty to forty gallons of water. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars up to the top with water”. The servants did as it was requested of them. Now Jesus said to them, “Draw some out in a cup and take it to the master of the wedding.”
The servants at the wedding drew some out and took it to the master of the feast. When the master tasted it. The water had become wine. The master called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first and when people are drunk the serve the poorer wine but you have kept the best wine until now. This wine was of a high quality”. This was the first miracle that Jesus did. He demonstrated his power.
Weddings are an important part of the Eastern way of life. It is a great embarrassment to the bridegroom if he runs out of wine. Jesus saved the bridegroom from an embarrassing situation.
We turn to God when we run out of our own resources. Jesus supernaturally changed the whole situation. The servants at the wedding played their part when they filled the jars with water. They had faith in Jesus to change water into wine. Jesus brought grace and a blessing to this situation.
In another story Moses brought God’s Judgement to Pharaoh. Moses held the staff over the River Nile as God had commanded him. In the first plague at the River Nile. The river was turned into blood because Pharaoh would not let the people of Israel go and worship their God. The fish in the Nile died and the river stank
God has the power to bring Grace or Judgement. At the wedding he brought Grace and to the Pharaoh he brought Judgement. It is the same God. God can do great things out of those situations that seem hopeless to us. We ask God to bring Grace into our lives. When we choose God. We choose life. The story of the Wedding at Cana is found in (John 2:1-11)
Dear Jesus
I ask you to bring your Grace and Peace into my life.
And
Your Healing power.
Amen.
