Jesus

The story of the Centurion’s Servant is found in the Bible Luke 7: 1-10.

There is a lot of talk of advancements in technology. AI is the latest tool that we are being encouraged to use. It seems world leaders want to outdo each other in producing a weapon that they would consider to be the most powerful and give them advantage over other nations.

Today the world needs people who can value other people. That is what changes people. Unfortunately, it appears systems are more important than people. It is easier to measure quantity than quality.

Jesus was very different compared to the modern-day world leaders. Jesus was about giving people value and restoring their relationship with God.  When Jesus came on the scene his message was very simple, “Repent, the Kingdom of God is near.” That is still the message for us all – a message very much needed in our world today. Repent simply means turn our faces towards God and honor him.

A Centurion had a servant who was very poorly. The Centurion valued him. He held a very high position but it did not stop him valuing his servant. He treated him with respect. In those days and still today that would have been very rare. Servants are treated as second- and third-class citizens.

The centurion’s attitude towards his servant must have pleased God. How often do we ask this question, “How can I please God?” The answer is how do we treat others. Do we look down on others if they are of a lower position than ourselves. It certainly matters to God. We are told God dwells with the lowly!

When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him, “He is worthy for you to come and do this for him. He loves our nation and has built a Synagogue.” Jesus went with them.

Jesus was not far from the house when the Centurion again sent a few friends to Jesus with the message, “Lord, I am unworthy for you to come to me. But if you say the word my servant will be healed. I too am a man with authority. If I say to a soldier do this task, he goes and does it, if I say to my servant do this task and it is done.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said, “I have not found faith like this even in Israel.” Then the men who had been sent went back and found that the servant had been healed.

We can learn from this story is how do we treat others. To God position is not important but our attitude. The Centurion cared about his servant. He sent the elders of the Jews to Jesus. They pleaded with Jesus to come and heal him. Jesus listens to our pleas.

The Centurion also saw something of the holiness of Jesus and realized he was unworthy to have Jesus come to his house. The holiness of God is still important regardless of what people are saying today in the social media. We are all unworthy before God because he is holy.

If you are struggling today plead with Jesus. He never turns anyone away.

       Dear Jesus

I am unworthy for you to come to me.

Please just say the word,

And I will be healed in my mind, body and spirit.

Amen

Thank you.
